「険悪の仲」は英語でなんて言う?
海外ドラマ「フレンズ」のシーズン1第2話にこのような会話がありました。
フレンズ シーズン1第2話より
母: What that Rachel did to her life. We ran into her parents at the club. They were not playing well.
(レイチェルはどうしちゃったのかしら。彼女の親御さんにあったけれど、なんだか険悪なムードだったわ。)父: I’m not going to tell you what they spent on that wedding. But 40,000 dollars is a lot of money.
(あの人たちが(レイチェルの)結婚式にいくら使ったかは言わないけど、4万ドルはかなり大金だな)母: Well at least she had a chance to leave a man at the altar.
(まあ、彼女は男を祭壇に置いていくチャンスがあっただけまだマシね)モニカ: What’s that supposed to mean?
(それってどういう意味?)母: Nothing.
(意味なんてないわよ)
セリフ上のシチュエーションからして「険悪なムード」と翻訳しておりますが、基本的に They were not playing well とは「仲が悪い」という意味があります。
(私の親は仲が悪い)
My sister is not playing well with my boyfriend.
(私の妹は私の彼氏と仲が悪い)
先ほどの「フレンズ」にでてきたセリフのように「一時的に仲が良くない状況」の場合にもnot playing well というフレーズが使えます。
この場合意味は「険悪なムード」となります!
また、「仲が良くない」という意味のフレーズは他にもあります。

そして「仲がよくない」とはちょっと意味が違ってきますが「対立している」を英語で言うと
となります!
